Best Places to Have a Vacation of a Lifetime
Below are the best places to have the vacation of a lifetime
#1. Pet a Whale – Baja California Sur, Mexico
Here is one of the best places for a lifetime vacation. The gray whales that congregate in lagoons a couple of hours from La Paz are famously known as the “Friendlies.” You’ve probably seen the videos and photos by now of people who visit them in the small boats called pangas. Some of the whales seem to seek out interaction, swimming directly to the boats and even bringing new calves with them. Lifting them as if to introduce them to humans while enjoying a nice head rub too. They can be seen between mid-January and mid-April before heading north to Alaska on their annual migration. But the optimal time is from mid-February through early March.
#2. Zhangjiajie National Park, China
Avatar is one of my favorite movies of all time, and although I’m certainly not expecting to come across the Navi or the Tree of Souls on my trip, I would love to see the spectacular mountains that inspired the floating rocks in the movie. What gives the Zhangjiajie mountains their beauty is their pillar-like formations and sheer majesty. The “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” stands at 3,540 feet. For a lifetime memories, visit here!
The Best Way to Experience the Zhangjiajie Mountains
There are varying ways to experience the national park, and I want to try them all! The Billabong Elevator (translated as ‘hundred dragons sky lift”—love that!) is 1070 feet tall and the world’s tallest lift! Once at the top, the views of the park and Hallelujah Mountain are said to be stunning. Then you can hop on one, if not all, of the 5 cable car rides around the park, exploring the Huangshi Village, the Tianzi Mountains, and the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge at the Tianmen Mountains, the longest and highest glass bridge in the world!
It’s a bit of a trek to get there. The most common route is apparently to fly into the city of Changsha and take the train to the town of Zhangjiajie, then get a bus or a taxi from there to the park. But however you get there, this is a vacation and lifetime experience worth adding to your bucket list!
#3. Go Waterfall Hopping – Iceland
A trip to Iceland is a bucket-list experience of its own. With the chance to experience some of the world’s greatest natural beauty, soak in hot springs, stroll black sand beaches, and more. The country is well-known for its many waterfalls, so what better way to enjoy a trip here than by waterfall hopping? Along the stunning South Coast, one of the first major falls you’ll come to is Seljalandsfoss, which plunges for over 200 feet—you can even walk behind the veil of water. Next up is Skogafoss, 82 feet wide with a drop of 196 feet.
Climb the stairs to view it from above, then watch as its powerful cascade creates a double rainbow on a sunny day. Gullfoss is right along the Golden Circle route, and if you head north, don’t miss Godafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods.” You’ve probably seen images of Kirkjufellsfoss before. Located on the Snfellsnes peninsula, it has a dramatic Mount Kirkjufell backdrop. It is the most popular destination for the best vacation of a lifetime.
#4. Fly Over the Fairy Chimneys, Turkey
This is definitely a must-see destination. Firstly, I saw these on an episode of “The Silk Road with Joanna Lumley” and instantly fell in love with the fairy chimney rock formations she got to explore. The result of ancient volcanic eruptions coupled with millennia of erosion, the fairy chimneys were originally huge rock structures formed by the hardening of the volcanic ash, which left behind a softer, more malleable rock called tuff.
At some point during the Roman period, persecuted Christians made Cappadocia their home and built a network of caves, churches, stables, and living quarters all dug into the rock. In the Joanna Lumley episode, you saw evidence of where kitchen pots would have been placed, horses would have been secured, and an ancient rolling security door that could be used in the event of an attack, giving the Christians time to flee to freedom through caves and narrow passageways.
#5. Sleep in a Haunted Castle – County Meath, Ireland
If you’ve ever wanted to spend the night in an authentic, centuries-old castle, Ireland is the place to do it. Those who have an interest in the paranormal might want to consider a stay in one of the most haunted Irish castles available for overnight stays: Ross Castle. Built in 1563, it enjoys a secluded location on the shores of Lough Sheelin in County Meath. Nothing much has changed over the years, and guests can also stay in the castle tower. Often referred to as a “ghost hunter’s paradise,” guests often mention waking up at various times during the night to the sounds of doors shutting on their own and the whispering of voices, even when no one else is there. A few have also felt the presence of something sitting right next to them in bed
#6. Witness the Great Migration at Serengeti National Park
Going on safari has long been on my bucket list. However, I don’t just want to do an African safari, although I’m sure that’s an amazing experience. No, I want to see masses of wildebeest galloping across the plains, fighting crocs in the rivers, and desperately trying to outrun the dramatic mealtime attacks by groups of lions! I want the immersive Lion King experience. The good news is that it’s available at an affordable price.
How Best to Experience The Great Migration
Most tours start at around $9k per person, but that includes full board, safari tours and experiences, and transfer flights (not international flights). An example trip might be starting in Kenya, heading to the Masai Mara for a few days, then onto Tanzania to spend a few days on the Serengeti, followed by a Big 5 safari! Plus, the wildebeest can just wander about at the water’s edge for a couple of weeks before crossing, so there’s definitely some luck involved.
The best time to see the river crossings is in August, but you could see thousands of wildebeest stretching as far as 40 kilometers starting in May. Along with the galloping Wildebeest, you might see elephants, hippos, zebras, and giraffes, as well as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. Due to the unpredictability of the weather and the inability to control the behavior of wild animals, a lot of this trip relies on luck. Hence, this is on my list of once-in-a-lifetime vacations.
#7. See the Northern Lights from the Lofoten Islands – Norway
The Lofoten Islands in Norway have become world-famous for their breathtaking beauty, and the area is also one of the best places on the planet for watching the northern lights with their magical colors reflected in the sea. They can be seen anytime between September and March, but historically, March and October bring the greatest occurrence of solar activity.
