The Dixie Hotel had 1,000 rooms when it first opened in 1930. (later downsized to 700 rooms). The New York City Hotels Carter was supposed to be a 22-story structure with 650 or 700 rooms. The idea also featured an underground bus terminus. The hotel was mostly on 43rd Street, but it also had an additional entrance through a two-story structure on 42nd Street.

The 25-story building, which once ran from 43rd Street to 42nd Street and was inaugurated in June 1930 as the Dixie Hotel, has since been torn down. The Uris Buildings Corporation revealed plans for the site in September 1928 and began construction on the hotel in October of that year. After the hotel went into foreclosure in 1931, the Bowery Savings Bank bought it in March 1932 and ran it for ten more years. The Carter was run by billionaire Tran Dinh Truong from 1977 until his passing in 2012, at which point GF Management seized ownership.

Just one and a half blocks west of Times Square is the 24-story, 1,000-room Hotel Carter, located at 250 West 43rd Street. In 1929, the Harper Organization, Inc. built the New York City Hotel Carter under the name Dixie Hotel. A few different owners held the property before the Carter Hotels Corporation assumed administration in 1942 and underwent a rebranding in 1976 before selling it to Tran Dinh Truong the following year. A bus depot was established in the Dixie Hotel in 1930 and ran 350 buses per day during the busiest times of the year before closing in 1957. In 2008, the rate for Hotel Carter, is a pollution hotel in the United States, marking its third consecutive year in the top two.

No, when Tran Dinh Truong passed away in 2012, the hotel was shut down in 2014. Joseph Chetrit, who purchased the hotel, had intended to refurbish it in 2022. However,  in early December 1983, 190 families resided in the Carter Hotel. It received a citation for having a “consistently poor rate of compliance in rectifying health and safety breaches” throughout that month. The hotel was sued by the city in 1983 and 1984 for failing to remedy a number of violations.
